Expansion and Contraction Lab

Problem:What will happen if you put a balloon on a bottle and put the bottle in hot and cold water. (?)

Research: Hot particles expand, cold particles contract. (Explain what is mean to expand and contract.)

Hypothesis: If you put the bottle in the cold water then the balloon wont inflate. (What about putting it in warm water?)

Materials: Safety goggles, Balloon, Plastic bottle, Warm water, Cold water

Procedure:

1.) Stretch the opening of the balloon over the neck of the bottle.
2.) Observe the balloon at room temperature. Record observations.
3.) Place the bottle with the balloon in the warm water for about 30 seconds.
4.) Observe the balloon again and record any changes you see in the balloon.

5.) Remove the bottle and balloon from the warm water and quickly place it in the cold
water for about 30 seconds (or until it cools).
6.) Observe the balloon and record any changes you see in the balloon.

Results:
Use the physical characteristics to describe the balloon.

Water Temperature
Prediction
Description of the Balloon
Room Temperature
nothing
it did nothing
Warm
inflate
it inflated
Cold
deflate
it deflated

Conclusion:
Our hypothesis was correct we stated that the cold water wouldn't make the balloon inflate results showed the same. (Use the describing words in your results to support your conclusion.)

can state a hypothesis related to the problem and procedure.
I can conduct research about concepts that are related to the topic I am investigating.
I can collect quantitative/qualitative data while conducting an experiment.
I can use the data in my results to draw a conclusion about what happened and why.
Overall, I can apply the scienctific method to solve a problem.
